Fantastic Hidden Gem
Spacious but cosy cabins, very clean, comfortable beds and pillows.
The lodge is a great place to relax with big leather sofas. A well appointed and characterful bar with a veranda outside and a dining room.
The food is excellent, there’s not huge choice but we all found something we liked and it was excellent the bison burgers are knockout. Breakfast and dinner were really good with locals from around the area coming to dine as well.
The staff are lovely, helpful and the owners Mark and John (Mark’s son) are there and are great.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 nights and will be back to stay again.

Do not ride here with children
Upon check in, I wasn’t overly impressed. The new front desk staff was sweet, but the female owner was rude when I asked how dangerous the horse rides were for a 7 year old. She snipped back “riding a bicycle is dangerous, you’re the mother you should know what your daughter is capable of”…. I’m a mother, assessing the risk for my child and putting my trust in an establishment to help discern the best decision.
At the stables, helmets weren’t offered. I had to request one for my daughter and Jackson kindly helped. They told me only one wrangler would be riding since we’re a group of 7, and that my daughter would be up front. Apparently, our wrangler didn’t know this, because he started off on his ride with her in the way back. After I spoke up she was moved up front, just in time for the lead horse to start bucking. After several severe bucks, with my daughter’s horse directly behind, the lead wrangler dismounts and decides to get a new horse. My daughter’s confidence at this point shaken.
Within 10 minutes of our ride the lead horse is spooked and takes off up the hill, causing most horses, including my daughters, to follow (to an extent). I had to grab my daughter’s horse in hopes it wouldn’t take off again or buck as it was clearly uneasy. The wrangler should have controlled his horse and helped, but in the chaos my daughter ended up last in line, crying and scared. Unable to get her horse to move, I’m trying to back up my horse to get to help her as the ride is slowly moving on, with her left way behind, wrangler way up in front. (So much for kids stay in front?) Moments later, another wrangler Stacia happened to be riding through. She starts riding circles with the lead wranglers horse, which then starts bucking and our lead wrangler FALLS OFF his horse. Not sure why they decided to train horses whilst on a beginner ride.
I asked Stacia if she can take us back on her return. My daughter is traumatized at this point and I have lost confidence of what lies ahead for the next 1 hour and 50 minutes.
My daughter said she felt very safe riding back behind Stacia and had no problems at all getting back. (Exactly what I would have expected for a paid trail ride) Stacia apologized for the “rodeo” and said we shouldn’t have experienced that.
My husband and 16 year old son finished the ride noting the lead wrangler walked his horse the remaining ride.
I asked for a refund for myself and my daughter, which was firmly denied because “our horses didn’t buck”. In short, wranglers falling off horses can happen and that’s an acceptable practice for a beginner ride at this establishment. They offered us another ride with a different wrangler, which was useless since we were checking out.
They showed zero care for customer service and child safety. They took no accountability for the wranglers lack of control, even though two other wranglers told us it was unacceptable.
I think the young owner (guessing he’s the son) cares. I could tell from the start he had a good heart and his demeanor was much different from his mother’s, who was very dismissive and demeaning. I hope for his sake, she steps aside and the business can make needed customer service changes and continue to succeed.
The rooms were as expected; complimentary water in the lobby would be a nice touch. Dinners were fine. New waitress the first night, new front desk staff and wrangles said there is an extremely high turnover.
For what it’s worth, before posting, I consulted two professional horse riders in Cody, who confirmed our experience was subpar and wanted to know the name of the ranch so they can avoid recommending. I’d never ride here again and strongly suggest you go elsewhere.

I’m truly sorry to hear that your experience wasn’t what you hoped for. As I explained in person, this is absolutely not the lasting impression we want any guest to leave with. Your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities, and we take any concerns very seriously.
We offered a re-ride, which you seemed to consider, but ultimately declined due to time constraints. I understand your disappointment, but I must clarify that we don’t issue refunds based on threats of negative reviews. We encourage all honest feedback, and I’m sincerely sorry that your time with us didn’t meet your expectations.
To clarify, the employee you spoke with at check-in is not the owner. She was simply trying to explain that once the ride departs, refunds cannot be issued if someone becomes nervous or decides to turn back. I apologize if this came across as dismissive.
Regarding safety, we have helmets available for every rider. Many guests appreciate the option not to wear them, as some ranches on public land enforce mandatory helmet use. We always encourage guests to wear helmets if it makes them more comfortable, and I’m glad Jackson assisted you with this request.
Our horses are well-trained and accustomed to the terrain, and our wranglers are experienced in handling the unexpected, including wildlife encounters. While no horseback experience is without risk, we aim to provide the safest, most enjoyable rides possible.
We also offer complimentary coffee and water in the lobby from 7-9 a.m. daily, and we appreciate your feedback on ways we can continue to enhance our guests’ experiences.
We’re truly sorry we didn’t meet your expectations this time, but we hope you’ll consider giving us another re-ride in the future.
