Cheap, Moldy, Dorm-Style Hostel
Note: This location does not have any elevators. Only saw a few downstairs rooms for mobility challenged guests. You reach the dorms up a flight of stairs.
Process:
Upon arrival, check-in is quite breezy. They show you how to use the free locker and print you a one pager for password to the hostel + password to your dorm. Where this location gets their lowest stars are overall cleanliness and house rules.
Cons:
-Moldy, mildewy shower grout; broken shower racks, dirty shower curtains, exposed shower grout, hard water stains, poor draining shower pans, broken body wash pumps, poor-ventilated spaces.
-Caked on dust on the air vents and air ducts; looks like they were never cleaned.
-The quiet hours are supposed to start at 10pm but people who are in your dorm leave the door wide open and don’t properly shut the door. That was not only a nuisance but also security issue.
-Additionally, people were eating in the dorm and while I notified the front desk, no one really got reprimanded.
Pros:
-Location to Gaslamp, Trolley lines, Convention Center.
-Cost per night is cheaper than many hotels.
-I also liked that they offered fresh towels and linens when requested.
-The common areas are tidy, including the kitchen, and upstairs working spaces.
Overall, if they took better care of the restrooms, being they actually cleaned them regularly with proper cleaning agents and didn’t have rampant mold / mildew smell, this would really be a steal. I’ve been to better maintained hostels in Europe.

In town for professionnal meeting at SDCC (20 minutes walk). Stayed 6 nights. Best price I could find with a short notice. Not my first time in San Diego and I preferred this hostel because those in Gaslamp have noisy customers. I prefer to walk a little more to have my quiet space at night.
I loved the private space in the dorms. Even with 10 beds in a mixed dorm, it was really quiet! Same for the bathrooms… only three showers but I always was alone and at regular hours. Also, really big showers with a locked door and no curtain sticking to you, and good water pressure. Kitchen is tiny though but I never cooked so not a problem for me. Lots of place in the fridge and freezer. Free coffee, tea and hot chocolate is nice!
With all the other comments I was prepared to see a lot of homeless people but it wasn’t the case and the never solicitated me.
